Test a peroxide-forming solvent before distillation
Reinforce ACS / Prudent Practices order. An expired peroxide former is not distilled without a peroxide test, and a high result is sent to disposal, not “gentle” distillation.
- Check the received date against the peroxide-former list.
- Check the opened date against the peroxide-former list.
- Test for peroxides with the taught strip or method.
- If peroxides exceed the discard limit, do not distill; arrange disposal.
- If within limit, distill only with the taught safeguards and never to dryness.
- Label the opened date and next test date.
- Do not evaporate an old ether on the rotary evaporator as a shortcut.
