Test a peroxide-forming solvent before distillation

Reinforce ACS / Prudent Practices order. An expired peroxide former is not distilled without a peroxide test, and a high result is sent to disposal, not “gentle” distillation.

  1. Check the received date against the peroxide-former list.
  2. Check the opened date against the peroxide-former list.
  3. Test for peroxides with the taught strip or method.
  4. If peroxides exceed the discard limit, do not distill; arrange disposal.
  5. If within limit, distill only with the taught safeguards and never to dryness.
  6. Label the opened date and next test date.
  7. Do not evaporate an old ether on the rotary evaporator as a shortcut.
