Stabilize a vehicle before hydraulic extrication

Practice the NFPA 1006 / IFSTA extrication order from rescue training. Scene hazards, stabilization, and battery isolation come before glass work or spreaders. Do not pull a victim until the path is open.

1. Control traffic and scene hazards.
2. Control fuel and ignition sources.
3. Stabilize the vehicle with cribbing or struts so it will not rock.
4. Disconnect or isolate the battery as the SOP requires, hybrid systems included.
5. Protect the patient with a hard cover.
6. Manage glass before cutting.
7. Make the taught relief cuts.
8. Then spread or ram.
9. Do not pull a victim until the path is open and spinal care is assigned.
