Shut in a well on a drilling kick

Practice the IADC / IWCF hard shut-in order. Space out, stop pumps, close the BOP, then open the HCR against a closed choke. Do not keep pumps on to “see if it settles.”

  1. Recognize the kick: pit gain, flow with pumps off, or a drilling break with flow.
  2. Space out so the tool joint is clear of the BOP.
  3. Stop the pumps.
  4. Close the designated annular or pipe rams.
  5. Open the choke-line HCR against a closed choke.
  6. Record SIDPP, SICP, and pit gain.
  7. Notify the company man and the well-control lead.
  8. Do not open the well or restart pumps until the kill sheet is ready.
