Run the adult BLS sequence with an AED
Practice the AHA adult BLS order from provider training. Scene safety, responsiveness, and breathing are separate checks. Compressions start after help is sent; clear, shock, and resume are separate AED actions.
- Verify scene safety.
- Check responsiveness.
- Check for normal breathing and a pulse (providers, no more than 10 seconds).
- Activate emergency response and send someone for the AED.
- Begin high-quality chest compressions (100–120/min, 2–2.4 in, full recoil).
- Give breaths at 30:2 if you are trained to perform CPR with breaths.
- Turn the AED on as soon as it arrives.
- Apply the pads.
- Clear the patient for analysis.
- Deliver a shock if advised.
- Resume compressions immediately.
