Run START triage at a mass-casualty point

Practice the NDMS START order from MCI training. After the walking wounded are directed out, score each remaining casualty with RPM. Treatment beyond the 30-second screen waits until the first pass is done.

  1. Direct anyone who can walk to a designated green area.
  2. Move to the first non-walking casualty.
  3. Check respirations.
  4. Open the airway once if the person is not breathing.
  5. Tag black if there is still no breathing.
  6. Tag red if respirations are over 30 or started only after the airway was opened.
  7. Check perfusion (radial pulse or capillary refill).
  8. Tag red if perfusion fails the immediate criteria.
  9. Check whether the person can follow simple commands.
  10. Tag red if mental status fails.
  11. Tag yellow if respirations, perfusion, and mental status are delayed.
  12. Do not stop for full treatment until the first pass is complete.
