Run an avalanche companion rescue

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Run an avalanche companion rescue” until the order feels automatic. Practice AIARE companion-rescue order from avalanche training. Probing is not started until the transceiver search has a close bracket, and the burial is not left to get more help first.

  1. Stop the group out of the slide path.
  2. Designate a leader.
  3. Call for help. Do not leave the site.
  4. Switch all transceivers to receive.
  5. Signal-search the debris for a hit.
  6. Complete the coarse search.
  7. Fine-search to a close bracket.
  8. Probe in the taught pattern until you hit the target.
  9. Leave the probe in place.
  10. Dig from downhill toward the probe.
  11. Clear the airway first.
  12. Do not abandon a viable burial to ski out for help before the companion search is done.
