Exsanguinating hemorrhage is controlled before airway. Each letter is its own action, and each life threat is treated before moving on.

1. Control catastrophic external hemorrhage if present.
2. Open the airway.
3. Protect the cervical spine while the airway is managed.
4. Assess breathing.
5. Treat a life-threatening chest problem before moving on.
6. Assess circulation.
7. Control remaining hemorrhage.
8. Perform a brief disability exam.
9. Expose the patient.
10. Prevent hypothermia.
11. Reassess ABCs after every intervention.
