Respond to a natural-gas odor inside a structure

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Respond to a natural-gas odor inside a structure” until the order feels automatic. Drill the PHMSA / utility odor-call order from gas-operations training. Lights and doorbells are not used, and the meter is not left flowing if the leak is indoors.

  1. Do not ring the doorbell, operate lights, or use a phone inside the structure.
  2. Evacuate occupants from outside.
  3. Eliminate ignition sources from outside.
  4. Check the atmosphere from outside with a calibrated CGI.
  5. Shut the meter or the taught valve if the leak is confirmed indoors.
  6. Ventilate only as the SOP allows after ignition sources are controlled.
  7. Do not restore gas until a tightness check is complete.
  8. Complete the appliance relight procedure only after the tightness check.
