Respond to a mine methane alarm

Practice the MSHA 75.323 methane-alarm order from underground-mine training. Power is not restored, and work does not resume, until ventilation and readings are acceptable.

1. Stop work in the affected area.
2. De-energize electrically powered equipment in that area.
3. Withdraw to intake air if methane reaches 1.5 percent.
4. Disconnect power at the source if the withdrawal threshold is reached.
5. Notify the section foreman and the responsible person.
6. Adjust ventilation only as the approved ventilation plan allows.
7. Re-enter only with a certified person.
8. Test with a calibrated methane detector.
9. Restore power only after methane is below 1.0 percent.
10. Resume work only after the examination finds the area safe.
