Respond to a mine methane alarm
Practice the MSHA 75.323 methane-alarm order from underground-mine training. Power is not restored, and work does not resume, until ventilation and readings are acceptable.
- Stop work in the affected area.
- De-energize electrically powered equipment in that area.
- Withdraw to intake air if methane reaches 1.5 percent.
- Disconnect power at the source if the withdrawal threshold is reached.
- Notify the section foreman and the responsible person.
- Adjust ventilation only as the approved ventilation plan allows.
- Re-enter only with a certified person.
- Test with a calibrated methane detector.
- Restore power only after methane is below 1.0 percent.
- Resume work only after the examination finds the area safe.
