Respond to a buried-utility strike

Practice the CGA damage-response order from excavation training. The line is not backfilled, and the hole is not left, until the operator is notified.

  1. Stop all mechanical digging.
  2. Shut off equipment that could ignite gas.
  3. Evacuate if it is a gas or unknown pressurized line.
  4. Call 911 if there is a leak or injury.
  5. Keep people and ignition sources out of the area.
  6. Notify the utility owner and 811 as required.
  7. Do not crimp, clamp, or backfill the damaged line unless the operator directs it.
  8. Photograph marks and the damage for the investigation.
