Respond to a buried-utility strike
Practice the CGA damage-response order from excavation training. The line is not backfilled, and the hole is not left, until the operator is notified.
- Stop all mechanical digging.
- Shut off equipment that could ignite gas.
- Evacuate if it is a gas or unknown pressurized line.
- Call 911 if there is a leak or injury.
- Keep people and ignition sources out of the area.
- Notify the utility owner and 811 as required.
- Do not crimp, clamp, or backfill the damaged line unless the operator directs it.
- Photograph marks and the damage for the investigation.
