Process a FOIA request through release review

Reinforce DOJ FOIA order from records training. Records are not released until search, exemption review, and the determination letter are complete.

  1. Log the request and start the statutory clock.
  2. Task the offices likely to hold records.
  3. Review each record for exemptions and foreseeable harm.
  4. Redact with the exemption code visible.
  5. Issue the determination letter with appeal rights.
  6. Do not silently withhold a record without a coded exemption.
