Place a legal hold on mailboxes and files

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Place a legal hold on mailboxes and files” until the order feels automatic. Drill the FRCP / Sedona preservation order from e-discovery training. Custodians are not asked to “clean up” after the hold notice.

  1. Identify the matter, date range, and custodian list with counsel.
  2. Issue the hold notice.
  3. Suspend automatic deletion for those sources.
  4. Preserve mailboxes, chat, and file shares in place or by collection.
  5. Collect acknowledgments from custodians.
  6. Release the hold only on counsel’s written instruction.
  7. Do not run a “cleanup day” or new retention job on held data.
