Log a drill core with depth and recovery

Practice the geologic-core order. Lithology is not described until the run is measured, recovery is computed, and boxes are labeled by depth.

  1. Record the run from–to depths from the driller.
  2. Measure recovered length.
  3. Compute percent recovery.
  4. Mark depths on the core.
  5. Mark depths on the box.
  6. Describe lithology and structures in depth order.
  7. Photograph the box with the scale and run card.
  8. Do not shuffle pieces to ‘make the box look complete.’
