Issue and close a hot-work permit

Practice the NFPA 51B hot-work control order from fire-watch training so ignition sources are not used before the area is prepared and the permit is issued.

  1. Inspect the work area for combustibles within the required radius.
  2. Remove or shield combustibles within that radius.
  3. Cover openings that could carry sparks.
  4. Verify a charged extinguisher is at the site.
  5. Assign the fire watch before work starts.
  6. Issue the hot-work permit for the approved window.
  7. Perform the work only inside that window.
  8. Keep the fire watch in place for the required time after work stops.
  9. Inspect the area for smoldering after the fire-watch period.
  10. Close the permit after that inspection.
