Issue and close a hot-work permit
Practice the NFPA 51B hot-work control order from fire-watch training so ignition sources are not used before the area is prepared and the permit is issued.
- Inspect the work area for combustibles within the required radius.
- Remove or shield combustibles within that radius.
- Cover openings that could carry sparks.
- Verify a charged extinguisher is at the site.
- Assign the fire watch before work starts.
- Issue the hot-work permit for the approved window.
- Perform the work only inside that window.
- Keep the fire watch in place for the required time after work stops.
- Inspect the area for smoldering after the fire-watch period.
- Close the permit after that inspection.
