Intake a rabies-vector wildlife patient

Reinforce NASPHV / rehab-permit order. A bat or raccoon is not handled bare, and the specimen is not discarded if a human was exposed.

  1. Don bite-proof gloves.
  2. Confine the animal without bare-hand contact.
  3. Ask whether any person or pet was bitten or woke with the animal in the room.
  4. If exposure is possible, do not release or destroy the head; coordinate testing with public health.
  5. Isolate the animal as the permit requires.
  6. Record finder location, time, and exposure details.
  7. Do not vaccinate a wild rabies-vector with a dog vaccine as a shortcut.
