Intake a rabies-vector wildlife patient
Reinforce NASPHV / rehab-permit order. A bat or raccoon is not handled bare, and the specimen is not discarded if a human was exposed.
- Don bite-proof gloves.
- Confine the animal without bare-hand contact.
- Ask whether any person or pet was bitten or woke with the animal in the room.
- If exposure is possible, do not release or destroy the head; coordinate testing with public health.
- Isolate the animal as the permit requires.
- Record finder location, time, and exposure details.
- Do not vaccinate a wild rabies-vector with a dog vaccine as a shortcut.
