Inspect a trench before workers enter

Reinforce the OSHA 1926 Subpart P competent-person order. No one enters until soil class, protective system, 2-foot spoils, and 25-foot egress are accepted.

  1. Have the competent person classify the soil for this excavation.
  2. Confirm a protective system is in place at 5 feet or more, matched to that class.
  3. Check for water accumulation and tension cracks.
  4. Confirm spoils and surcharge sit at least 2 feet from the edge.
  5. Confirm a safe means of egress within 25 feet in trenches 4 feet or deeper.
  6. Test or control the atmosphere if a hazardous atmosphere is possible.
  7. Allow entry only after the competent person accepts the inspection.
  8. Re-inspect after rain, vibration, or a change in conditions.
