Recognize and remove the allergen as separate actions. Antihistamines are not the first drug, and a second IM dose is timed only after reassessment.
- Recognize anaphylaxis.
- Remove the ongoing allergen if it is safe to do so.
- Call emergency services.
- Give epinephrine IM in the mid-outer thigh.
- Place the patient supine and raise the legs unless breathing is worse flat.
- Reassess after the first dose.
- Give a second IM dose at the taught interval if signs persist.
- Do not substitute an antihistamine or inhaler for the first epinephrine dose.
