Excavate an archaeological unit by levels

Practice the field-archaeology order from CRM / academic field-school training. Artifacts are not bagged until the level is mapped, photographed, and the elevation is recorded.

  1. Establish the grid.
  2. Record the opening elevations.
  3. Excavate in the taught natural or arbitrary levels.
  4. Map before lifting features.
  5. Photograph before lifting features.
  6. Bag artifacts by unit, level, and date.
  7. Screen the matrix.
  8. Close the level notes the same day.
  9. Do not dig a ‘treasure hole’ through unrecorded levels.
