Establish LCES before a wildland assignment
Practice the NWCG LCES order from wildland-fire training. Frequencies and check-in are separate comms actions. The crew does not engage until lookouts, communications, escape routes, and safety zones are identified.
- Identify lookouts who can see the fire and the crew.
- Confirm radio frequencies.
- Confirm a check-in interval.
- Walk and time at least two escape routes.
- Designate a safety zone that can hold the crew without fire shelters.
- Brief the assignment only after LCES is in place.
- Disengage if any element of LCES is lost.
