Establish LCES before a wildland assignment

Practice the NWCG LCES order from wildland-fire training. Frequencies and check-in are separate comms actions. The crew does not engage until lookouts, communications, escape routes, and safety zones are identified.

  1. Identify lookouts who can see the fire and the crew.
  2. Confirm radio frequencies.
  3. Confirm a check-in interval.
  4. Walk and time at least two escape routes.
  5. Designate a safety zone that can hold the crew without fire shelters.
  6. Brief the assignment only after LCES is in place.
  7. Disengage if any element of LCES is lost.
