Enter a permit-required confined space

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Enter a permit-required confined space” until the order feels automatic. Drill the OSHA 1910.146 entry order from confined-space training. The space is isolated and the atmosphere is tested from outside before the supervisor authorizes entry.

  1. Confirm the permit covers this space, this work, and this shift.
  2. Isolate the space from energy and adjoining process lines.
  3. Station the attendant outside the space.
  4. Test oxygen from outside with a calibrated direct-reading instrument.
  5. Test flammable gases and vapors (LEL) next.
  6. Test toxic air contaminants last.
  7. Ventilate if any reading is outside acceptable limits.
  8. Retest until acceptable entry conditions exist.
  9. Don the required PPE.
  10. Don the retrieval harness.
  11. Attach the retrieval line to the mechanical device or fixed point.
  12. Have the entry supervisor sign the permit to authorize entry.
  13. Post the signed permit at the entry portal.
  14. Maintain continuous attendant contact until the last entrant exits.
