Deploy a fire shelter on a wildland entrapment

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Deploy a fire shelter on a wildland entrapment” until the order feels automatic. Drill the NWCG fire-shelter order from firefighter survival training. Site selection, shake-out, entry, and hold-down are separate actions. Do not stand to check during the flame front.

1. Recognize that escape routes are cut.
2. Pick the clearest, lowest-fuel site.
3. Drop packs and tools that will melt or take time.
4. Shake out the shelter.
5. Get inside with your feet toward the oncoming fire.
6. Hold the straps down.
7. Keep your face to the ground.
8. Stay until the fire front has passed and a supervisor or the heat drop says to exit.
9. Do not stand up to “check” during the peak of the flame front.
