De-escalate a crisis using the CPI stance

Practice the sequence you already learned for “De-escalate a crisis using the CPI stance” until the order feels automatic. Practice CPI / verbal-intervention order from behavioral-health training. Hands-on holds are not the first step, and the person is not crowded while still verbal.

  1. Check your own distance, exit, and team backup.
  2. Use a supportive stance and a calm, limited verbal.
  3. Set one clear limit at a time.
  4. Offer choices that are actually available.
  5. Call for a physical intervention only if imminent harm remains.
  6. Debrief and document after the person is safe.
  7. Do not argue content while they are escalating.
