Cut over DNS with a planned TTL

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Cut over DNS with a planned TTL” until the order feels automatic. Practice DNS cutover order from web-operations training. The old origin is not decommissioned until TTL is lowered, the new records resolve, and the soak time has passed.

  1. Lower TTL on the records that will change.
  2. Wait out the old TTL.
  3. Stage the new origin and prove it on a test hostname.
  4. Change the production records in the planned window.
  5. Verify resolution from multiple resolvers.
  6. Watch error rates for the soak period.
  7. Decommission the old origin only after that soak.
  8. Do not drop the old origin at the same second as the record change.
