Cover floor holes and set deck guardrails

Reinforce OSHA 1926 Subpart M from fall-protection training. Work on the deck does not resume until holes are covered and marked and the leading edge is guarded.

  1. Identify every hole 2 inches or more in its least dimension.
  2. Install a cover that supports at least twice the intended load.
  3. Secure the cover against accidental displacement.
  4. Mark the cover HOLE or COVER.
  5. Set a top rail on unprotected sides 6 feet or more above a lower level.
  6. Set a midrail between the top rail and the walking surface.
  7. Set a toeboard where falling-object protection is required.
  8. Reinstall or inspect the cover after any trade moves it.
  9. Do not step on an unmarked sheet.
  10. Do not leave a hole open just for a minute.
