Cover floor holes and set deck guardrails
Reinforce OSHA 1926 Subpart M from fall-protection training. Work on the deck does not resume until holes are covered and marked and the leading edge is guarded.
- Identify every hole 2 inches or more in its least dimension.
- Install a cover that supports at least twice the intended load.
- Secure the cover against accidental displacement.
- Mark the cover HOLE or COVER.
- Set a top rail on unprotected sides 6 feet or more above a lower level.
- Set a midrail between the top rail and the walking surface.
- Set a toeboard where falling-object protection is required.
- Reinstall or inspect the cover after any trade moves it.
- Do not step on an unmarked sheet.
- Do not leave a hole open just for a minute.
