Transfer papers are not started until the medical screening exam is done, and the receiving hospital must accept first.

1. Provide a medical screening exam within the capability of the dedicated ED.
2. Stabilize the emergency medical condition to the extent possible.
3. If transfer is needed, obtain the receiving hospital’s acceptance.
4. Send copies of records with the patient.
5. Obtain the informed written transfer consent or physician certification.
6. Use qualified personnel and equipment for the transfer.
7. Do not delay the screening to inquire about insurance.
