Complete a DEA controlled-substance shift count

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Complete a DEA controlled-substance shift count” until the order feels automatic. Drill the DEA perpetual-inventory count order from pharmacy training. Discrepancies are reported before the outgoing nurse or pharmacist leaves.

  1. Open the locked cabinet or ADM with two authorized people present.
  2. Count each C-II (and other counted schedules) against the perpetual log.
  3. Compare the count to the last transaction and waste documentation.
  4. If the count matches, both people sign the shift log.
  5. If it does not match, freeze further issues and notify the PIC or supervisor.
  6. Do not leave until the discrepancy is documented.
