Complete a CDL pre-trip inspection

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Complete a CDL pre-trip inspection” until the order feels automatic. Drill the FMCSA CDL vehicle-inspection order so engine, walk-around, and air-brake checks are separate taught items before the vehicle moves.

1. Review the last driver vehicle inspection report.
2. Check engine-compartment fluid levels.
3. Inspect belts and hoses for wear or looseness.
4. Look for leaks at the engine, hoses, and air compressor.
5. Inspect tires and wheels, including tread, inflation, and lug nuts.
6. Check lights, reflectors, and lighting switches.
7. Inspect the coupling, fifth wheel, and air and electrical lines if equipped.
8. Check in-cab gauges and warning lights.
9. Test the wipers, horn, and seat belt.
10. Confirm emergency equipment is present and charged.
11. Build air to governor cut-out and confirm the gauge works.
12. Perform the applied air-leakage test.
13. Test the low-air warning device.
14. Confirm spring brakes pop out in the required pressure range.
15. Test the service brake and parking brake as equipped.
16. Sign the report and do not depart until defects are recorded or cleared.
