Close a surgical count before the cavity is closed

Practice the AORN count order from OR training. Fascia is not closed until sponges, sharps, and instruments reconcile.

1. Complete the initial count before the incision.
2. Count again when a cavity or hollow organ is closed.
3. Count sponges, sharps, and instruments with the scrub and circulator together.
4. If the count is incorrect, notify the surgeon and stop the closure.
5. Search the field, Mayo stand, and trash.
6. Obtain intraoperative imaging if the item remains unresolved.
7. Document the final count and any X-ray before the patient leaves the room.
