Check provenance before an acquisition

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Check provenance before an acquisition” until the order feels automatic. Drill AAMD / AAM provenance order from museum-curatorial training. A purchase is not approved until ownership history, red-flag gaps, and the title opinion are in the file.

  1. Assemble the ownership history from the offered documents.
  2. Search lost-art and sanctions databases for the object and the names.
  3. Flag gaps, especially 1933–1945 and recent conflict zones.
  4. Obtain a title or legal opinion on remaining risks.
  5. Present the file to the acquisitions committee.
  6. Do not buy on a verbal ‘from a good family’ story.
