Call 811 and pothole before you dig

Practice the Common Ground Alliance one-call order from excavation training. Mechanical digging does not start until marks are confirmed and the tolerance zone is potholed.

1. Notify 811 with the ticket lead time required in this state.
2. Wait for all utilities to mark or to declare clear.
3. Walk the marks against the ticket and photographs.
4. Pothole by hand or vacuum in the tolerance zone to expose the line.
5. Protect the exposed utility before mechanical equipment enters that zone.
6. Stop and notify the utility if a mark is missing or a line is struck.
