Bypass a safety instrumented function under permit
Practice the IEC 61511-1 bypass order. The SIF is not jumpered until compensating measures, a time limit, and signed approvals are in place, and the bypass stays visible at the board.
- Identify the SIF and the hazard it covers.
- Record why a bypass is requested.
- Define compensating measures.
- Set a maximum bypass duration.
- Obtain the operations and technical approvals on the bypass permit.
- Apply the bypass and announce it at the board.
- Watch the process continuously while the SIF is out.
- Restore the SIF before the time limit.
- Cancel the permit.
- Never leave a silent bypass.
