Bypass a safety instrumented function under permit

Practice the IEC 61511-1 bypass order. The SIF is not jumpered until compensating measures, a time limit, and signed approvals are in place, and the bypass stays visible at the board.

  1. Identify the SIF and the hazard it covers.
  2. Record why a bypass is requested.
  3. Define compensating measures.
  4. Set a maximum bypass duration.
  5. Obtain the operations and technical approvals on the bypass permit.
  6. Apply the bypass and announce it at the board.
  7. Watch the process continuously while the SIF is out.
  8. Restore the SIF before the time limit.
  9. Cancel the permit.
  10. Never leave a silent bypass.
