Brief a wildland lookout before the crew engages

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Brief a wildland lookout before the crew engages” until the order feels automatic. Drill the NWCG IRPG lookout order from wildland-fire training. The crew does not leave the briefing until the lookout has frequency, check-in, trigger points, escape routes, and the safety zone.

  1. Place the lookout where they can see the fire and the crew.
  2. Confirm radio frequency.
  3. Confirm a check-in interval.
  4. Point out the escape routes.
  5. Point out the safety zone.
  6. Agree the trigger that means disengage.
  7. Engage the assignment only after that brief.
  8. Do not use a lookout who is also on a tool in the black.
