Autoclave a biohazard load

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Autoclave a biohazard load” until the order feels automatic. Drill the BMBL / AAMI steam-sterilization order. Bags stay loosely closed so steam can penetrate, and the load is not signed off until the indicator has passed.

  1. Confirm the load type.
  2. Select the matching validated cycle.
  3. Load so steam can penetrate; do not overpack sealed bags.
  4. Place a chemical integrator in the densest part of the load.
  5. Run the validated cycle; do not interrupt it.
  6. Wait for the chamber to depressurize before opening.
  7. Unload with heat-resistant PPE.
  8. Read the integrator or biological indicator.
  9. Quarantine the load if the indicator fails.
  10. Log the cycle, operator, and result.
