Approach an energized panel using an arc-flash boundary

Reinforce the NFPA 70E approach order from electrical-safety training. Boundaries and PPE are set before any cover is removed, and LOTO is applied before the live-dead-live test.

  1. Identify the equipment and read the arc-flash label values.
  2. Establish the arc-flash boundary.
  3. Establish the limited approach boundary.
  4. Establish the restricted approach boundary.
  5. Don the PPE required by the incident-energy or PPE category before crossing a boundary.
  6. Isolate energy sources and apply LOTO if the task requires a de-energized state.
  7. Verify the test instrument on a known live source.
  8. Test each phase for absence of voltage.
  9. Retest the instrument on the known live source.
  10. Do not remove a cover until boundaries and PPE are set.
