Apply railroad blue-flag protection

Practice the sequence you already learned for “Apply railroad blue-flag protection” until the order feels automatic. Practice 49 CFR 218 blue-signal order from railroad-worker training. Workers do not go on, under, or between equipment until blue flags and locks are up.

  1. Confirm the track authority or shop protection for this equipment.
  2. Display blue signals at both ends, or the controlling end as required.
  3. Lock or tag the controlling locomotive or derail as the rule requires.
  4. Only then go on, under, or between the equipment.
  5. Remove blue signals only after every worker is clear and accounted for.
  6. Remove blue signals only if you are the same craft or group that displayed them.
  7. Do not move the equipment while any blue signal is displayed.
